Frugality? at United?

I was on a couple flights in August and was lucky enough to get upgraded to first class. It’s both been a while since I’ve flown and also since I sat in first class. I benefited from the automatic upgrades that United now gives to their frequent fliers (pending availability).

A few things I noticed…

  • United has replaced their dinky wine glasses with ones approaching normal (white wine) size. They replaced ones that were very small and had almost no stem.
  • United has replaced their coffee mugs with ones similar to a typical coffee mug, albeit a bit smaller in diameter. They replaced ones that were more akin to tea cups, or what I’ll describe as fancy coffee cups.
  • They served cookies on napkins instead of on small plates, the same ones they used for their old coffee cups. The cookies of course were falling apart, and also had enough oil to stain through the napkin. Oh, by the way on my first flight they used the plates?!?

Ok so we bought new stemware and coffee mugs, but can’t use the plates we have in stock. Go figure.

(I suppose it could be left to the discretion of the flight attendants. Or, it might have to do with the shorter (2 hour) duration of the flight. In any event, it didn’t make much sense.)
