The Rolls Royce Trent Turbofan Engine

The Rolls Royce Trent, like the PW4000, is another evolutionary design which builds upon a proven engine core, that of the Rolls Royce RB211-524H. The Trent series, also offered on the 747-400, Lockheed L-1011 and the A330, comes from Rolls Royce Aero Engines in England and is widely favored among Asian nation especially those with strong historical ties to Great Britain. It should be noted, however, that England's own flag carrier, British Airways, decided to break with its longstanding tradition of equipping its aircraft with Rolls Royce power and instead electing the power its 777's with GE90 engines, in the process losing some commonality with the RB211-524H units on its 747-400s. An indication of the Trent's commonality with the RB211 family is seen in Rolls Royce's offering of retrofit kits to equip RB211 powered aircraft with the updated Trent core. Trent engines for the 777 were designed with a 111 inch diameter fan and retains the multiple shaft design of the RB211. Trent engines are available from 75,000lbs to a proposed 98,000lbs with the Trent-884 certified at 84,000lbs for the 777-200IGW.
